The design originates from the redevelopment of NTMoFA’s souvenir store, aligning with the museum’s new goals of innovation and diversity. To rejuvenate the museum’s clientele and initiate this transition, the approach starts with the art store as a point of interaction with the public. The conventional retail model is overturned, incorporating innovative design for a new image of the museum.
Centering around the convergence of rivers, we imitate watercourse to connect diverse functions and facilitate shared living, academic communication, cultural exploration or interpersonal networking to encourage interactions.
The NTMoFA was founded in 1988, emerging as a pivotal source of Taiwanese aesthetics nationwide. Situated within the urban green belt, the design ingeniously incorporates the concept of waterways, seamlessly integrating art into the fabric of everyday life. These cultural watercourses derive from the amalgamation of inherited aesthetics and the diverse contexts of user experiences, flowing into the daily activities of people from various directions.
The branching and converging of the waterways also symbolize various dimensions of significance: the cultural connections between the past and the new generations, interdependence between diverse groups, each distinct yet reliant on one another. To meet the needs of people of different ages, the store takes shape with its continual spatiality.
Located at the primary entrance area of the NMoFA, the site is symbolically tied to the past through a massive arch, allowing the building to establish a connection with the outside world. Artificial decorative elements obstructing sightlines were removed to reintroduce natural light into the interior of the building. In the main open space inside, a linear arrangement of lights is configured into an arch on the ceiling, creating a dialogue with the external arch in a transcendent way and shaping an interior space with a lighting layer resembling natural light.
To cater to the diversity of the store, the design addresses varying scale requirements of different functions. Considering the wide range of products that interest different age groups, a modular scale system is employed for the changing display heights. Curved bidirectional axis is introduced to improve the viewing angles for single-sided displayed items.
Incorporating ergonomics, the design dissects the spatial functions into a modular system based on a 15cm height, with seven configurations ranging from 30cm to 120cm. This allows for flexible adjustments based on different display requirements.
Material system is also approached from functionality, employing different fabrics for various user interfaces. Utilizing a light color palette achieves a subdued and harmonious visual coherence.
Intentionally arranging different scales to correspond to various needs: Like child seats are 30cm high, and adult seats are 45cm high. Children’s book display tables and coffee tables are 60cm high, and work and reading desks are 75cm high. General merchandise display tables are 90cm high, flat book display tables are 105cm high, and exquisite souvenir display cabinets are 120cm high.
Various materials serve different functions and showcase layered textures: durable and easy-to-clean metal sheets for the surfaces of food preparation; soft and skin-friendly fabric for the seats; hard-wearing plastic sheets for product display shelves; warm, low-glare wood veneer for reading desks and and workshop desks. The application of HPL boards is for easy maintenance and cost control.
Unlike traditional museum stores, the design enhances its public nature. It provides cultural and spatial experiences by introducing reading, coffee, art viewing, and parent-child workshops. The store wishes to bring visitors together with diverse services, creating various incentives to enter the store. The aim is to stimulate the artistic and aesthetic creativity of both children and adults, aligning with the museum’s vision of inspiring children’s art, in response to the museum’s educational mission.
The product display is arranged in the style of an exhibition, encouraging visitors to appreciate the products from an exhibition before making a purchase, moving away from the traditional consumption pattern of browsing products, it deepens the shopping experience of museum goers.
